Walt the News Guy

Just dropping a note to talk about the year that was.  I taped an appearance today on WNMU-TV’s Media Meet program that focused on the big stories of last year.  I was joined on the panel by TV6 News Anchor Steve Asplund and The Mining Journal’s John Pepin.  The program was moderated by a long-time friend and mentor of mine, Bill Hart, who gave me my first job in radio back in 1987.

The major focus of our discussion was two-fold: the economy and the recent election.  It was interesting to see that the last year was so dominated by those two issues.  Obviously, we have all been touched by the declining economy through the collapse of the stock market and fluctuating oil prices and we certainly saw a groundbreaking race for President.

What struck me the most about the discussion about those two topics was the dichotomy of the emotions that were encompassed within them.  What I mean is that the state of the economy could best be summed up as filling many people with despair while the Barack Obama presidential campaign filled many people with a strong sense of hope.  Of course, those are some broad generalizations, and not everyone will agree with me, but the last year was a unique opportunity to see how people can ride both sides of emotional issues.

Tune in to Public TV13 this weekend to catch the show.  It’s a good way to spend half an hour.
