GOOD DAY BLOG-O-PHILES!   WELCOME TO WEDNESDAY.

IT'S THE MIDDLE OF THE WEEK!

Here it is!  The middle of the week!  Wednesday.  We say “WENZ-dayh“, but we spell it “wed-nes-day“.  That seems odd.  So I started to wonder what the origin of the word was, and this is what I found out from Wikipedia:

Wednesday is a day of the week in the Gregorian calendar. According to international standard ISO 8601, it is the third day of the week. This day is between Tuesday and Thursday. The name is derived from Old English Wōdnesdæg and Middle English Wednesdei, “day of Wodanaz“, ultimately a calque of dies Mercurii “day of Mercury”

So that should explain it.  Right?  Oh well, on to our guests!

“Y” WEDNESDAY ONCE AGAIN!

THE YMCA'S LISA COOMBS-GEROU.

Lisa Coombs-Gerou stopped in to talk about things happening at the YMCA of Marquette County.  The big push that’s on right now has to do with the “Strong Kids” Campaign.  This fund raising effort generates money that will be used by the YMCA to give scholarships to needy youth in our community to cover their fees for using the various facilities at the Y.  This gives community youth the chance to use the Y to better themselves physically and mentally that may never have been able to do so.  This results in the aforementioned “Strong Kids”.

THE LATEST UPDATE ON THE NMU THREAT

Northern Michigan University in Marquette was closed down today due to an online threat. According to NMU officials, a tip was received concerning an online message that threatened students, faculty, staff and administrators but it was unclear as to where any incident may occur.  As a result, University officials chose to close down for the day just after 8-30 this morning as a precautionary measure.

Reports say the threat was made in a blog posting that indicated there would be shootings on campus starting at 10-am and the results would be worse than the shootings at Virginia Tech in 2007. In response to the threat, adjacent facilities such as Marquette High School and the YMCA closed for the day as well.

The NorthStar Academy and Polaris Middle School in Marquette also closed early for today.  Marquette General Hospital is also currently open as usual but they are monitoring all entrances until further notice.
