SNOWFLAKE returns to Marquette, MI.

MARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – A special evening combining live music and performance art is coming up tomorrow night in Marquette to help the homeless.

“Snowflake”, a performance piece created and portrayed by Gayle LaJoye of Marquette, is being performed along with sets from three local music groups at Kaufman Auditorium.

The show’s proceeds are going to benefit the “Room at the Inn” homeless assistance agency.  Robin Roy, the program co-ordinator for the group joined Mark & Walt in the Morning today to promote the show.

Co-chairs Tom Blake and Mark Canale joined Mark Evans to talk about the campaign so far and how people can still become a part of it.  They also explained where the money goes and what agencies are included under the blanket of the United Way in Marquette County.

MARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – A recently completed survey of health-related attitudes in Marquette County is being tabulated and early results are being released to the public.

George Sedlacek, Director of Community Health with the Marquette County Health Department, and Dr. Kevin Piggott, Medical Director of the Medical Care Access Coalition, joined Mark & Walt in the Morning to discuss the survey and it’s findings.

The survey asked county residents to rate their attitudes about health matters and give feedback about both

the successes and failures of the health care system locally.  Findings were fairly consistent with expected outcomes and these statistics will serve as the base point for an ongoing effort to correct any shortcomings of the current health care model for the county.

UPDATE:  M-553 IS OPEN AGAIN TO THROUGH TRAFFIC. 

MARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – Marquette City Police have announced the closure of M-553 this morning to through traffic near the Marquette Mountain Ski Area due to a traffic accident.

The closure will be in effect until approximately 9-am as the investigation and clean-up of the accident continues.

No details or information of the accident have been released at this time.

MARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – Drivers traveling between Iron Mountain and Palmer may experience some delays this afternoon due to a major equipment moving project.  Here’s the story from the newsroom:

 

Cliffs Natural Resources is moving a piece of oversized equipment from the Michigan-Wisconsin border in Dickinson County to the Tilden Mine today that could impact travel on several U-P roads.
The equipment that is being moved is a kiln shell piece that is 26-feet in diameter and weighs approximately 67 tons. This kiln shell move is similar to one moved in 2009.  The move will affect vehicle travel on roads from the Michigan/Wisconsin border at Florence, WI to the Tilden mine beginning around noon today.
The kiln shell move will start at U.S. 2 North at U.S 141 at the Michigan-Wisconsin border, then progress to M-69 East, to M-95 North, to U.S. 41 East to M-553 South to Marquette County Road 480 West to M-35 South to the Empire Mine entrance at Palmer, arriving at approximately 4:00 PM EDT.

(MARQUETTE, MI) – Great Lakes Radio News – Marquette County authorities responded to a rollover accident yesterday afternoon in Negaunee, MI.  Here’s the story from the newsroom:

 

A MARQUETTE COUNTY WOMAN WAS ARRESTED AFTER A SINGLE-VEHICLE ROLLOVER ACCIDENT YESTERDAY AFTERNOON.  THE ACCIDENT HAPPENED AROUND 4:50 PM ON EAST MAAS STREET NEAR THE NEGAUNEE CEMETERY WHEN A JEEP CHEROKEE, DRIVEN BY AN UNIDENTIFIED ISHPEMING WOMAN, WENT OUT OF CONTROL, LEFT THE ROADWAY AND ROLLED OVER.  THE DRIVER WAS TRAPPED INSIDE THE VEHICLE AND HAD TO BE EXTRICATED BY RESCUERS. 

SHE WAS TAKEN TO M-G-H FOR TREATMENT OF MINOR INJURIES AND WAS LATER RELEASED.  SHE WAS THEN ARRESTED AND TAKEN INTO CUSTODY FOR DRIVING WITH A SUSPENDED LICENSE.  ADDITIONAL CHARGES ARE PENDING AS POLICE BELIEVE ALCOHOL AND EXCESSIVE SPEED WERE FACTORS IN THE ACCIDENT. 

THE WOMAN’S NAME IS BEING WITHHELD PENDING FURTHER INVESTIGATION.

MARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News)– The Economic Club of Marquette County is holding their next regular meeting and dinner next Monday evening in Marquette.

Tom Baldini, board member of the Econ Club, joined Mark and Walt in the Morning today to preview the upcoming event.  The speaker this time around will be David Ivan, who is the author of the Michigan State University small city survey.

The evening gets underway with a social hour at 6pm followed by the dinner, the speaker and some Q&A.  The evening is held at the Ramada Inn in Marquette.

MARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – A pair of great community events are happening this weekend in the west end of Marquette County.

On Saturday evening at the Mitchell United Methodist Church in Negaunee, there will be a special evening of music to benefit the annual Toys For Tots campaign and a food drive as well.

Dawn Johnson with the church, and one of the performers at the event, joined Mark and Walt in the Morning today to preview the show.

 

Then on Sunday morning, head over to Ishpeming to enjoy the 8th Annual Holiday Breakfast Buffet.  This event is a benefit for programs and services provided by the Ishpeming and Ishpeming Tri-Township Lions Clubs.

MARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News)– An annual Christmastime tradition is back in Marquette County this week.  The Peninsula Arts Appreciation Council is presenting the classic Christmas story of “Scrooge” at the Negaunee High School Auditorium.

Bobby Glenn Brown, show promoter and lead actor, joined Mark and Walt in the Morning today to talk about the show and it’s run.  The show is running this Thursday, December 1-st through Sunday, December 4th with show times for Dec. 1-st at 7-pm and Dec. 4-th at 2-pm.
