MARQUETTE, MI – Great Lakes Radio News– Organizers from the  Great Lakes Center For Youth Development say their upcoming U.P. Non-Profit Conference is filling up fast and people who are interested in taking part need to sign up as soon as possible.

Paul Olson, with the GLCYD, joined Mark and Walt in the Morning to discuss the conference as well it’s schedule and keynote speaker and to try and get listeners to register.  The conference is being held at the campus of Northern Michigan University and is coming up soon.

Some of the hearty Law Enforcement Torch Runners on a break in Marquette.

MARQUETTE, MI – Great Lakes Radio News – An annual tradition on Mark and Walt in the Morning returned today with the Law Enforcement Torch Run For Special Olympics coming through town.

The Torch Run is an awareness campaign and fund raiser for Special Olympics in Michigan and features a 750-mile relay run from Copper Harbor in the far northern U.P. to the downstate locale of Sterling Heights.  All proceeds raised through this effort go to Special Olympics programs across the state.

MARQUETTE, MI – Great Lakes Radio News – The 2011 Campaign Co-chairs for the United Way of Marquette County visited the Sunny 101.9 studios today to join Mark and Walt in the Morningto encourage listeners to get involved and give to this year’s campaign.

This year’s co-chairs are Mark Canale and Tom Blake.  They joined Walt Lindala to talk about how they became involved with the campaign and why they feel it’s important to give to the United Way of Marquette County.

They also explained how several member agencies are helped by a wide range of contributions of all sizes coming together to make a big impact on those in need.  They also reminded folks that money given in Marquette County stays here in Marquette County.

MARQUETTE, MI – Great Lakes Radio News – The Civil War and the role Michigan’s iron resources played in preserving the Union will come to life this weekend when the Michigan Iron Industry Museum in Negaunee Township hosts a Civil War artillery encampment. This encampment features military and civilian camp life, cannon demonstrations, cooking demonstrations and costumed portrayals of Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln.

Barry James with the Michigan Iron Industry Museum called in to chat about this weekend’s events and told the listeners what was scheduled and when they should come out to the museum.  He added this event is free of charge, but donations are appreciated.

MARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – Hockey fans who golf can channel their inner Happy Gilmore this weekend and help out Marquette Junior Hockey by hitting the links.  The 13-th Annual Marquette Junior Hockey Golf Outing is being held this Saturday at the Marquette Golf and Country Club.  Several teams will have the chance to battle it out on the Heritage Course and help to raise funds for the Junior Hockey Program.

Jacki Lykins, representative for Marquette Junior Hockey joined Sunny 101.9’s Mark and Walt in the Morning today to encourage listeners to take part in the annual outing.  She explained how the funds raised at the outing go to help defray the expenses for kids to be involved in the Marquette Junior Hockey program.

MARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – The City of Marquette’s Presque Isle Park is currently competing online to win the 2011 “This Place Matters Community Challenge.” The city is currently ranked in the top 30 of 100. Each person is only allowed to vote once throughout the Challenge, and voting ends on June 30.

Marquette Mayor John Kivela and Dave Ollila from Marquettte Backcountry Skiing joined Mark Evans in the Sunny Studios this morning to inform the listeners of this current competition and how they can have an impact on it’s outcome by voting.

MARQUETTE, MI (Great Lakes Radio News) – Marquette County’s Cruise -N- Coffee has announced the results of their recent Charity Week effort to benefit Bay Cliff Health Camp in Big Bay, MI.

Dawn Johnson, spokesperson for Cruise N-Coffee joined Sunny 101.9’s Mark and Walt in the Morning today to let the listeners know how much money was taken in over the week.  According to Johnson,  $508.00 was raised in the effort.  All of the proceeds will go to fund youth program assistance at Bay Cliff Health Camp.

Mike Morgan, V.P. of the Kiwanis Club of Marquette

(MARQUETTE, MI) – An annual sign of summer has arrived in Marquette, MI.  It’s time again for the Kiwanis Chicken Barbeque at Lakeview Arena.  This community event is favorite for all ages and is a sure signal that summer is back in Upper Michigan.

Mike Morgan, Vice President of the Kiwanis Club of Marquette, stopped in at the Sunny 101.9 studios this morning to tempt Mark and Walt and all of the listeners to get tickets for this tasty event.  Morgan explained that this is the 55-th annual barbeque and is the largest fund raiser for the Kiwanis.  He also said tickets are $9.00 and can be picked up at the door or from any Kiwanis member.  He could also be called at 458-3528 for tickets as well.

(MARQUETTE, MI) – The Marquette County Health Department is encouraging residents around the county to bike to work this Friday.  The “Bike To Work Day” program is part of a nationwide effort to get people moving and into the habit of riding their bikes to work when they can.

George Sedlacek, Director of the Community Health Division with the Marquette County Health Department, joined Mark and Walt in the Morning today to encourage listeners to part in the program.  He also outlined some special activities planned for Friday morning to make the ride fun and enjoyable.
