MARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – The Great Lakes Center for Youth Development in Marquette is hosting some unique training opportunities over the next few weeks.

Paul Olson, with the GLCYD, stopped in at the SUNNY 101.9 studios to discuss the “Cultural Competence” sessions featuring training area youth about the Japanese culture and increasing awareness about similarities and differences between the two.

He also discussed the seminars being held that focus on evaluating the effectiveness of board members of non-profit organizations.  They are being held in several locations around the U.P.

Linda Remsburg, Youth Development Associate at the GLCYD, joined Mark & Walt in the Morning today to discuss the Marquette-Alger College Access Network, a new proposed plan to increase college enrollment by area youth.

MARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News)– As the Christmas season approaches, the Great Lakes Center For Youth Development in Marquette sees this as a time for parents and other adults to teach youth a variety of life lessons.

Paul Olson, with the GLCYD, joined Mark & Walt in the Morning today to discuss that concept.  He outlined how by taking kids out shopping that they can learn empathy for others and develop an understanding of supporting others who may be less fortunate.

He also talked about how doing seasonal good deeds can develop a strong work ethic as well as a clear sense of civic duty and personal responsibility in youth that will carry over into adulthood.

MARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – The Great Lakes Center for Youth Development is holding their 7-th annual Upper Peninsula Non-Profit Conference tomorrow at Northern Michigan University.

The event’s keynote speaker is Jack Kresnak, the CEO of Michigan’s Children, an advocacy group for youth people in the state.  Kresnak was a reporter for 38 years with the Detroit Free Press, covering youth issues since the late ’80’s.

Kresnak chatted with SUNNY 101.9’s Walt Lindala recently about the why he is so passionate about youth issues in the state and what message he is bringing to the conference.

MARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – The Great Lakes Center for Youth Development is hosting their annual U.P. Nonprofit Conference once again this fall, and Paul Olson, from the GLCYD, joined SUNNY 101.9′ s Mark and Walt in the Morning today to talk about it.

Olson outlined several of the topics being discussed at various seminars including building a solid board of directors for your agency to how to handle internal problems such as embezzlement.  He also explained how the conference is programmed to benefit all types of non-profit agencies.

One key item Olson also brought up was early bird registration for the conference.  He said that by doing so, you would be registered for some fun prizes, including tickets to see The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band at the Calumet Theater or a silver “U.P.” pendant.

MARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – Area non-profit agencies in Marquette and Alger Counties will be able to gain valuable information to make their groups stronger and more effective thanks to a special conference being put on by the Great Lakes Center For Youth Development this fall.

Ann Gonyea, with the GLCYD, visited the Sunny 101.9 studios this morning to chat with Mark and Walt about an extension of a call for presenters at the conference.  She explained what they are looking for in terms of presenters and how anyone who may be interested can get involved.

(Marquette, MI) – Ann Gonyea with the Great Lakes Center for Youth Development joined Mark and Walt in the Morning for an update on activities going on at the agency.  She outlined how you can nominate volunteers of all types for the U.P. Service Awards.  The awards recognize volunteers from several categories and the deadline for nominations is Wednesday, June 1st.

She also outlined a pair of events next week in Munising and Marquette that will feature the findings of a survey of youth assets in Marquette and Alger Counties.  The “2010 Profiles of Student Life:  Attitudes and Behaviors Survey” data will be publicly distributed at the sessions.

Ann Gonyea with the  Great Lakes Center for Youth Development joined Mark and Walt to feature Excellence in Education activities planned this week for student and teachers in Marquette and Alger Counties.  She outlined several events including a dinner this evening at Northern Michigan University in Marquette to recognize students and the teachers that were influential in their success.

There are several other sessions and outings planned throughout the week for students and their teachers to take part in across the North-Central U.P.
