MARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – On Monday evening, January 16th at the Ramada in Marquette from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., the Marquette County Economic Club will be featuring Spigarelli from Getz’s Inc. and Terry Dehring, from QuickTrophy. These two Marquette based business men will discuss their internet sales growth and other successes.

Tom Baldini, long time friend of Mark & Walt in the Morning, joined the show this week to promote the dinner and meeting and explained more about the evening’s program and how you can become a member of the club.

Tom Baldini, board member of the Econ Club, joined Mark and Walt in the Morning today to preview the upcoming event.  The speaker this time around will be David Ivan, who is the author of the Michigan State University small city survey.

The evening gets underway with a social hour at 6pm followed by the dinner, the speaker and some Q&A.  The evening is held at the Ramada Inn in Marquette.

This Monday evening, the Econ Club starts the season off with a talk by CNN anchor and reporter Candy Crowley.  Crowley will be speaking at the monthly dinner and meeting of the club, held at the Ramada Inn Marquette.   Economic Club Board Member Tom Baldini joined Mark and Walt in the Morning to preview the evening.

Tom also discussed becoming a club member and how to get registered for the dinner this Monday.

Senator Debbie Stabenow joins Mark and Walt.

MARQUETTE, MI – Great Lakes Radio News– Michigan’s Junior U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow stopped in at the Sunny 101.9 WKQS studios this morning while visiting Marquette County to speak to the Economic Club and meet with constituents.

The Lansing Democrat outlined a series of initiatives involving new technology and industry to create jobs in the Upper Peninsula.  She also discussed the role of new technologies will work with traditional industries in our area such as forestry and mining.

She also talked about how she shares the frustration with voters about the political process in Washington, D.C. and Congress and the lack of willingness to come to reasonable compromise for the betterment of the Country and it’s people.

IT’S FRIDAY!!  WE WENT OUT WITH A BANG!

Sometimes the ol’ Mark and Walt in the Morning show is a fully packed deal.  Sometimes it isn’t.  Today was filled to the gills!!  Of course, that’s the way we like it around here.  Triple-booked and stuffed with information.

In fact, the whole week has been pretty busy around these parts.  in one week, we’ve covered food drives, labor rallies, Easter church services, veterans affairs, economic and educational programs and a whole lot more!

Whew!! No wonder Friday feels so darn good this time around!

 

PROJECT ISHPEMING FOOD PANTRY ROLLS ON!

DICK DERBY.

Dick Derby, organizer of the Project Ishpeming Food Pantry, called in with an update on the effort.  He talked about the distribution of 4000 bags earlier this week in the Ishpeming and west Ishpeming areas.  The second half of the effort happens tomorrow.  Starting at 10-am, volunteers will be traversing the streets, picking up the bags, which will be filled by community members with non-perishable food items, paper products and toiletries.

Those items will then be taken to the Ishpeming Salvation Army and the Ishpeming St. Vincent DePaul and will be split between the two agencies for distribution for the needy in the community.

Tom Baldini, immediate past president of the Economic Club of Marquette County, joined us today to preview the next speaker coming to Marquette.  The dinner will be held this Monday at 6-pm at the Ramada Inn in Marquette and will two speakers.  They are Sam Watson and Peter Schonfield with the Michigan Hospital Association.

A VERY UNIQUE LEARNING OPPORTUNITY AT NORTH STAR ACADEMY.

Karen Anderson, CEO and Superintendent at North Star Academy in Marquette visited the studios today to discuss an innovative and unique learning opportunity aimed at area seventh graders.  The program will get kids out of the classroom and give them a chance to “get their hands dirty” by doing a project outside of the school facility.

A CHAT WITH ONE OF MICHIGAN’S LEADING ECONOMIC EXPERTS.

MSU PROFESSOR OF ECONOMICS, DR. CHARLES BALLARD.

Dr. Charles Ballard, Professor of Economics at Michigan State University, joined Mark and Walt this morning to discuss his views on the current economic situation in Michigan.  Ballard, who is visiting Marquette to speak this evening at the monthly meeting of the Economic Club of Marquette County, discussed his opinions about how the state’s economy got to where it is and what he feels it will take to get it back on track.

He also outlined some of his concepts on the importance of strong, well-funded K-12 schools and universities in the recovery of Michigan and how the budget plan put forth by the Snyder administration does not seem to follow those ideas.  He also discussed tax cuts, the tax structure in Michigan and how excessive tax cuts have gotten Michigan into the budget deficit situation it’s in now.

Ahhhhh!  A sure sign of spring is upon us.  It’s St. Patrick’s Day.  The day where many of us celebrate the Irish spirit with Irish spirits and the wearin’ o’ the green!

When I was getting dressed this morning I thought that I should wear something green and what’s more appropriate that an Aaron Rodgers Green Bay Packer jersey?  Looks pretty good, doesn’t it?

As I said this morning, it’s not so much “Erin Go Bragh” as it is “Aaron!  Go Long!”

U 19 WOMEN’S HOCKEY IS HEADED TO THE NATIONALS!

 

SYDNEY, ABBY and COACH AMENSON.

The Advantedge Sports Training U 19 Women’s Hockey team, based in Marquette, is heading to National Competition in Anaheim, California.

The coach of the squad, Laura Amenson, and two of the players, Sydney Sarasin and Abby Esbrook, stopped in at the Sunny Studios to chat about their success as well as the challenges still ahead of them.

THE LATEST SPEAKER COMING TO ADDRESS THE ECON CLUB.

DAVE BRULE II

Thanks to Joe Esbrook (and the ethereal Tom Baldini) for joining Mark & Walt in the Morning today to discuss the latest speaker being brought to the area by the Economic Club of Marquette County, Dave Brule II.

Brule  is Co-Owner and Executive Vice President of Northern Star Industries, Inc. (NSI). NSI, located in Iron Mountain, MI has two business units, Systems Control and Boss Snowplow. Systems Control designs, manufactures and markets electrical relay and control panels to the utility industry. It also manufactures metal buildings that house the panels.

Boss Snowplow manufactures a complete line of snow removal equipment for pickup trucks and utility vehicles (UTV’s).  Combined the company employs approximately 350 people.  Dave has been with NSI, a family-owned business, for 11 years.
