The Morning Team, Mark and Walt.

MARQUETTE, MI – After a week away, the world-traveling Mark Evans was back on the program this morning, bringing Mark and Walt back together.  Unfortunately, (or fortunately – depending on how you look at it) we’ll only be back together for a short time.  That’s because now, it’s MY turn for some time off!

I’m hitting the road on Tuesday and going downstate for a week.  Going to see the in-laws and friends, eat some good foods, catch a Tiger game at Comerica Park and just relax!   I need it and I can’t really wait to get away for few days.  It should be fun, and I hope to bring back some kind of travel log of my adventures.

While I’m away, our all purpose overnight guy, Tony, will be helping Mark out on the big program.  Also lending a hand will be the Illustrious Doctor Don with news duties in my absence.  It’ll be fun, and I hope you’ll keep listening although I won’t be around.

Have a great week and we’ll catch you on the flipside when I get back!

CHEERS!

Staying Quiet.

The temptation has been great to weigh in on the death of Osama Bin Laden, but I think I’ll just do everyone a favor and keep my mouth shut, my fingers off of the keyboard and my thoughts to myself.

There are a few other things going on out there I could go off on as well, but in the interest of reducing unnecessary and ineffective banter that simply clutters the mind, I’m staying silent…for now.

WHAT SNOW?  NOT HERE, MAN!

OH NO! NO SNOW!

So here we go again!  Another prediction for Marquette County of  an impending blizzard that didn’t happen.  This has to be one of the oddest winters on record.  While areas to the south in Lower Michigan, Wisconsin and even Illinois have been pummeled with record-setting amounts of snow his season, those of us right here in Marquette have had to deal with very little overall snowfall.

Usually, the tables are turned and those visiting Marquette are amazed and bewildered by the usual amounts of snow that we seem to almost take for granted.  Not having those snows this year has also shown why we actually need them.  Many businesses, from hotels to outdoor gear and supply shops, have struggled due to the decline of customers coming to Marquette.

Think about it.  The average group coming to Marquette County to enjoy winter recreation either has four or five people, packed in a big ol’ SUV with a trailer packed with snowmobiles.  You know they spending at least one hundred dollars each per day on lodging, food, fuel and the various souvenirs.  Or for those who enjoy the silent sports, there’s more than a few Subaru wagons with a full roof rack of skis and gear and three or four skiiers who need places to sleep and food and drink to enjoy.  That’s money coming into Marquette County, kids!

Take that away due to poor weather.

Suddenly, those of us who live here year ’round and depend on the business the visitors bring into our coffers are looking at troubling balance sheets.  Not good.  Times are tough enough around these parts and having a weak winter is not a helpful thing.  So, as much as I grouse about the snow when comes and complain about winter hanging on, we need the snow and the cold.

Without it, we’d be sunk.

Just a thought.

THE RETURN OF MARK EVANS.

Today “mark”ed the return of Mark Evans to the show.  Ya get it??!!??

THE STUFFED STUDIO "NESSIE!"

OK, so that’s not so funny after all, but it was good to have the happy wanderer back on the program today after his globe-trotting adventures.  As he told us, England was grand and the trip was fun, but he truly fell in love with Edinburgh, Scotland.  He says he wants to go back.  Some time THIS year!  That’s saying something!  Mr. Grumpy usually doesn’t care for long trips, but there must be something over there that captured his heart.  Well, good for him!

A TRIP TO LOCH NESS WAS “NESSIE”-SARY!

"NESSIE" OUT FOR A COUNTERTOP SWIM!

A special thank you to my traveling compatriot who brought me some souvenirs of his journey to the infamous Loch Ness.  A table-top Nessie to take home and a stuffed Nessie for the office.  I always like gifts and these did not disappoint.  Now he’s back and I have new toys.

And that’s the way things should be!

More to come tomorrow!

THE CONTINUATION OF THE WEEK!

Wednesday it is.  The week rolls on and we go along for the ride.  Hang on everybody, it’s gonna move pretty fast!  Buckle up for safety!

TALKING TANNING TAXATION.

CURT HEWITT AND MICHELLE LAMERE

Thanks to Curt Hewitt, owner and operator of Utopia Tanning and Skin Care Spa in Marquette and Michelle LaMere, owner and operator of Shape Up Fitness and Tanning in the Country Village in Ishpeming for stopping in this morning to discuss a little-known clause in the Health Care legislation that was approved by lawmakers in Washington, D.C. last year.

The legislation places a tax on tanning services and tanning stores that has caused them to have to raise their prices for tanning to absorb the extra expense.  This has caused a decline in customers for each of them and has eroded their bottom line.  They are calling on lawmakers to rescind this tax, calling it unnecessary and detrimental to their business.

CATCHING UP WITH AND OLD FRIEND.

BART STUPAK

Former Congressman Bart Stupak called in to the program today to chat about what he’s been up to since leaving office.  He talked about his current experiences at Harvard and more interacting with young people interested in the political process.

He indicated that he misses a lot of being in Washington, D.C., but he is happy to be able to spend time at his home in Menominee.

AHA!  THAT GOT YOUR ATTENTION, DIDN’T IT??

JACK RABBIT GETS FAMILIAR WITH THE STUDIO.

Today is National Kick Butts Day, which is another organized effort to get people to cut down and eliminate smoking from their daily routines.  It’s also the day that I met my new temporary morning show partner.

You see, Mark will be away from the office during the first week of next month, and instead of  doing the show just by myself, we’ve brought in Jack Rabbit.  He’s a seasoned radio veteran and was actually one of the first vegetarians I ever met in this business!

So be sure to tune in during the first week of April as we hop to it and bring you “Jack ‘n Walt in the Morning”.  No…wait a minute…that name doesn’t sound right, does it?  I’ll have to work on that!

KICKIN’ BUTTS ALL THEY WAY TO THE CURB!

GEORGE SEDLACEK OF THE MCHD.

George Sedlacek, Director of the Community Health Division of the Marquette County Health Department, stopped in the Sunny Studios this morning to talk about Kick Butts Day, which is today. He discussed how the effort works to help discourage continuing cigarette smoking in adults and the starting of smoking in youth.

He also gave us some eye-opening statistics about how much money is frittered away if you smoke one pack a day over twenty years.  Not only is it an unhealthy and dangerous habit, it’s downright EXPENSIVE!

Take a moment and listen to the interview by clicking “HERE“.  You can also visit the Marquette County Health Department website by clicking “HERE“.

SO THERE YOU HAVE IT!

A unique day to say the least.   Just the way I like it!  See you again soon!
