Dr Kevin Piggott, medical director of the Marquette County Health Department joined Mark and Walt recently to discuss the findings of a recent study taking a look at the many factors that make up healthful living in Marquette County and the rest of the State of Michigan.

U.S. CONGRESSMAN DAN BENISHEK

U.S. Congressman Dan Benishek called in and chatted with Mark and Walt about his tour that he is currently making across the massive 1st Congressional District which encompasses the entire Upper Peninsula as well as a substantial portion of northern Lower Michigan.

He talked about what messages he’s bringing back from Washington, D.C. to his constituents concerning federal spending and budget issues and what he’s hearing from folks in the region.

He also expressed a bit of frustration with the political process in Washington and also talked about key areas of the budget and spending he is specifically studying for adjustment.

A CHAT WITH ONE OF MICHIGAN’S LEADING ECONOMIC EXPERTS.

MSU PROFESSOR OF ECONOMICS, DR. CHARLES BALLARD.

Dr. Charles Ballard, Professor of Economics at Michigan State University, joined Mark and Walt this morning to discuss his views on the current economic situation in Michigan.  Ballard, who is visiting Marquette to speak this evening at the monthly meeting of the Economic Club of Marquette County, discussed his opinions about how the state’s economy got to where it is and what he feels it will take to get it back on track.

He also outlined some of his concepts on the importance of strong, well-funded K-12 schools and universities in the recovery of Michigan and how the budget plan put forth by the Snyder administration does not seem to follow those ideas.  He also discussed tax cuts, the tax structure in Michigan and how excessive tax cuts have gotten Michigan into the budget deficit situation it’s in now.

THE LATEST ON SEVERAL MATTERS AT NMU.

NMU PRESIDENT DR. LES WONG.

Northern Michigan University President, Dr. Les Wong, joined Mark and Walt today to discuss the latest updates in the world of NMU.  Dr. Wong recently returned from Lansing where he and his fellow public university presidents testified in the state legislature about the proposed 15-plus percent cuts in higher education funding put forth by Michigan’s new Governor, Rick  Snyder.  He talked about the impacts this level of cuts would have on the University from both the  staffing and programming level.

Dr. Wong also chatted about some upcoming construction projects on campus as well as the recent visit by President Barack Obama.  Also discussed was the latest on the recent threat of shootings at the university.

MARCH IS COLORECTAL CANCER AWARENESS MONTH, BUT THERE IS SO MUCH MORE TO BE AWARE ABOUT.

VICKI RAKOWSKI

Vicki Rakowski, with the American Cancer Society, called in recently to discuss March being Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month and the importance of early detection in surviving this form of cancer.  She also outlined risk factors and other guidelines such as age and family history.  She also talked about how important it is to talk to your doctor about this cancer and to get past any embarrassment there my be associated in your mind about it.  She also mentioned about not fearing the testing and why it needs to be done.

RELAYING FOR LIFE ON CAMPUS AND IN TOWN!

CARL FULSHER

Carl Fulsher, local representative for the American Cancer Society, joined Mark and Walt in the Morning to talk about the upcoming Relay for Life on the campus of Northern Michigan University.  The NMU Relay will be held on March 25-th and 26-th on campus and will feature all of the same elements of Relays that are held around the region every year.  He also chatted about the upcoming community Relay for Life that will be coming up in a few months in Marquette County.

In his usual energetic way, Carl outlined what happens at a Relay for Life and why it is such an intense yet fun celebration of survivors of cancer and a remembrance of those who we have lost to cancer.

A NEW OPTION IN THE TREATMENT OF CANCER IS ESTABLISHED HERE AT HOME.

DR. DAN ARNOLD

Dr. Dan Arnold, Oncologist/Hematologist with Marquette General Health Systems and Superior Health Partners, and Director of the MGHS Cancer Center, joined Mark and Walt recently to talk about that group becoming a member of the Great Lakes Cancer Institute.  The GLCI is a network of hospitals around Michigan that are similar in size to MGH and work together to participate in clinical trials and other programs to develop more options and plans when it comes to treating cancer.

Joining the network allows cancer patients here in Marquette County and around the Upper Peninsula to get top-level cancer treatment close to home.

THE REPORT ON WATERFRONT SAFETY HAS BEEN PRESENTED.

TAKS FORCE CHAIR GARY GUSTAFSON.

Gary Gustafson, chair of the City of Marquette Waterfront Safety Task Force, joined Mark and Walt to discuss the preliminary report that was presented recently to the Marquette City Commission.

He outlined what the findings of the Task Force were and what suggestions were put forth to improve the safety of all who choose to swim along any of the open waterfront beaches in the city of Marquette.

KEEPING MARQUETTE COUNTY KIDS SAFE THIS NEW YEAR’S EVE.

We spoke recently with Bobbi Ayotte with the “CHAMP” (Communities Hosting Alternatives to Minors Partying) program and she filled us in about a special event coming up this New Year’s Eve intended to keep our area youth safe by presenting them an alternative to underage illegal partying.  The group is also looking for volunteers to help out with it’s various events and activities.  To find out more about the events and to log on to their facebook site, please click “HERE

WORLD-CLASS BLUES BAND COMES TO MARQUETTE DIRECT FROM THE WINDY CITY!

The Marquette Area Blues Society presents an evening with LURRIE BELL’S CHICAGO BLUES BAND with special guests Mike Letts and the Marquettes.  The show is this Friday, November 5th, 2010 at 7:30pm eastern at the UpFront & Company Ballroom Marquette, MI.  This is a special concert and membership drive to benefit the Marquette Area Blues Society.
