MARQUETTE, MI – Great Lakes Radio Sports– The Gwinn Area Community Schools District has discontinued their varsity football program for the rest of this season.

The district’s Board of Education voted last night to take the action due to a low number of students able to play the sport.

Reports say Gwinn had only 12 players able to play in a game against Negaunee scheduled for this Saturday. School officials said the low number of students participating in the game would have forced them to play the entire game and would have significantly increased their risk for injury.

As a result, the board voted to end the program. The football team was also facing a further loss of players due to academic eligibility requirements taking effect on Friday. The district hopes to restore the varsity football program in the coming years.

Great Lakes Radio’s Mark Evans spoke with Gwinn Schools Athletic Director Duane VanDrese this morning on Sunny 101.9’s Mark and Walt in the Morning to get the latest information about this decision.
