MARQUETTE, MI – Great Lakes Radio News– A local musical theater veteran has developed a (mostly) one-man show to benefit the Lake Superior Theater. Rusty Bowers, a Marquette native with over 30 of stage experience has assembled several of his favorite musical numbers from several shows he has appeared in and will be presenting them this week at the Frazier Boathouse Theater in Marquette.

Bowers joined Sunny 101.9’s Mark and Walt in the Morning today to promote the show and explain where the idea for it came from. Bowers also outlined some of the show’s highlights without giving away some of the surprises.

MARQUETTE, MI – Great Lakes Radio News – A full day of Finnish foods, crafts music and dancing is set for this Saturday for folks to come and enjoy.  Finn Fun Day is scheduled from 11-am to 6-pm at the Ishpeming Township Hall and is free and open to the public.  The event features all aspects of Finnish culture and celebrates it as an influence on life here in Marquette County.

Event organizer Tanya Stanaway joined Sunny 101.9’s Mark and Walt in the Morning today to preview the day’s schedule as well as the musical and culinary treats available for those who attend.  She also talked about why the event is being held and how anyone interested in Finnish culture should make it a part of their weekend.

MARQUETTE, MI – Great Lakes Radio News– The Economic Club of Marquette County has released their schedule for their 35-th year of bringing prominent speakers to Marquette County to address local community and business leaders.  As usual, the club has assembled a wide range of speakers from a variety of fields including politics, business, the media and more.

Tom Baldini, Board Member with the Econ Club joined Sunny 101.9’s Mark and Walt in the Morning today to discuss the new season of speakers as well as how interested individuals can become members of the club if they so choose.  He also explained how anyone can attend a dinner if they are interested in becoming a member.

Marquette Township Manager Randy Girard

MARQUETTE, MI – Great Lakes Radio News – Marquette Township is coordinating an emergency services exercise at Lost Creek tomorrow.  Area fire departments, EMS, law enforcement, dispatch, emergency management, Citizen Emergency Response Team, Salvation Army and Red Cross will test their abilities to communicate and coordinate evacuation and shelter in place strategies after a mock explosion.

Township Manager Randy Girard joined Sunny 101.9’s Mark and Walt in the Morning to discuss the exercise which offers an opportunity to evaluate the Marquette County and Marquette Township Emergency Operations Plans.

Girard says they are asking Marquette Township residents and visitors to avoid the area of Lost Creek from the hours of 8am to 12:30pm, if possible.  There will be many emergency vehicles staging at the Marquette Township Hall in the morning with an increased volume of traffic in the area.

MARQUETTE, MI – Great Lakes Radio News – Three bands that made a lasting impact on Marquette’s musical history are roaring back to life tonight. A trio of the area’s most popular rock groups from the early 1980’s have reformed and are playing a special show tonight at the Wooden Nickel in North Marquette.

The bands have all agreed to reunite and perform as a fund raiser for Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Marquette and Alger Counties.

The bands, The Hideous Ones, The Queen City Rockers and Blind Ambition are joining forces with Mike Letts and the Marquettes for the event called “80’s Scene and Reheard“. Jayne Letts, with Big Brothers/Big Sisters, along with event organizer and musician Ron Carnell joined Mark and Walt in the Morning to share the details of this special event.

Jayne and Ron talked about how the event came together and what folks can expect from the evening. Ron explained how everyone involved with the bands leapt at the chance to do it and that some of the performers are making the trip back to Marquette from as far as Columbia.

The show starts around 9-pm TONIGHT at the Wooden Nickel Bar and a $5.00 cover charge goes directly to Big Brothers/Big Sisters. There is also a scheduled open mike for Saturday night as well.

MARQUETTE, MI – Great Lakes Radio News – The Lake Superior Theater is presenting a special summer camp this year for special needs kids.  Patrick Bradley, a counselor with the LST Drama and Dreams Playscape and Summer Camp, joined Mark and Walt in the Morning today to chat about the camp and how you can get involved.

The camp utilizes techniques learned in theater to develop life skills of the kids who take part.  Bradley explained that there is limited space available, so people need to get involved now if they are interested.

MARQUETTE, MI – Great Lakes Radio News – The Marquette County YMCA facility in Marquette is closing down at the end of this month. But don’t panic! It’s only for a short time as it is for the annual maintenance and cleanup of the building and equipment.

Lisa Coombs-Gerou, Executive Director of the “Y” joined Mark and Walt in the Morning today for a regular “Y” Wednesday update about things going on at the agency, and she explained that the shutdown will be in effect from August 30th to September 6th. She also explained that the West End Y facility in Negaunee will remain open during the period.

There will be staff at the Marquette facility during the shutdown to take telephone calls and answer e-mails and other web-based messages.

Governor Rick Snyder joins Mark and Walt.

MARQUETTE, MI – Great Lakes Radio News Michigan Governor Rick Snyder visited the Sunny 101.9 WKQS studios this morning to chat with Mark Evans and Walt Lindala during his tour of the Upper Peninsula.  Snyder, who kicked his campaign for Governor off last year on Mark and Walt in the Morning, engaged in a rapid-fire conversation about several issues currently facing the state and his administration.

Snyder shared his thoughts about the state economy and how it can be fixed through individuals, communities and government working together to find solutions.  He also talked about the success of the harbor dredging effort in Grand Marais and how a mix of business and tourism will be the key factors in the future of the U.P.

The Governor, who has been targeted for recall, also discussed his reactions to the recent recall elections in Wisconsin, voiced his perspective about the differences between Michigan and Wisconsin and how he intends to stay the course politically.

MARQUETTE, MI – Great Lakes Radio News – Michigan State Senator Tom Casperson joined Sunny 101.9’s Mark and Walt in the Morning to chat about the latest happenings in Lansing.

Senator Casperson discussed the trip he was making later today to join Governor Rick Snyder in Grand Marais to meet with residents about the harbor dredging effort and what it means to that small Lake Superior coastal community.  Casperson, a current target for recall, also gave his thoughts on the outcomes of the recent recall elections in Wisconsin and what impact they may have on recall efforts here in Michigan.

Casperson then wrapped up with a few encouraging words about the U.P State Fair going on this week in his hometown of Escanaba and invited everyone to come over and enjoy the Fair.

MARQUETTE, MI – Great Lakes Radio News – Chocolate milk is the new sports drink. Don’t believe it? It’s true! Sophia Bly with the “Refuel With Chocolate Milk” tour stopped in on Mark and Walt in the Morning today to preview the tour’s stop this weekend at Lakeview Arena in Marquette.

Sophia talked about the replenishing benefits of chocolate milk when had after a 45 minute workout. She outlined the ratios of carbohydrates to proteins and explained how chocolate milk makes an excellent addition to any solid workout. She also talked about the Milk Moustache campaign and convinced the intrepid hosts of the program to drink up and wear milk moustaches proudly.
