FRIDAY IT IS…AND AWAY WE GO!

PINK FLOYD? NOOO! FLAT BROKE!

PINK FLOYD? NOOO! FLAT BROKE!

Getting into the weekend was an interesting proposition today, to say the least.  We looked back to last night, at the Seafood Fest in Mattson Lower Harbor Park and ahead to Football Night in Negaunee.  It was busy and fun and we talked about the giant clam shell in Lower Harbor Park.  See the picture to the left to get an idea about the new Arabesque Tent currently set up in the park.

MORE ABOUT THE TENT.

NIKKE NASON.

BUSY WEEKEND AHEAD!

And with that little tidbit, I have to get going!  See you all soon!

WELL, IS IT NESSIE??

The claim has been made that this image has captured the Loch Ness Monster on Google earth.  Tell us…what do you think?

NESSIE?

THEY SAY THE WEATHER’S SEASONAL.  FEH!

DON'T LET THE FOG, RAIN AND SLEET FOOL YOU! IT'S STILL AUGUST AROUND THESE PARTS!

DON’T LET THE FOG, RAIN AND SLEET FOOL YOU! IT’S STILL AUGUST AROUND THESE PARTS!

It certainly hasn’t been that much of a summer up here in Marquette County!  I don’t think things are going to bode well for overall tourism numbers this season.  The rainy weather and cooler (if not downright COLD) temperatures have kept people away in noticeable amounts, and when you factor in the bad economy and high gas prices, it’s just not a pretty picture!  Don’t get me wrong, there are visitors here, and there has been a slight spike in the amount of RV’s I’ve seen on the roads over the last week or so, but it just hasn’t FELT like summer up here, so the folks have stayed away.  Oh well, I guess we’ll just have to make the best of it and get along!  Hanging on in stoic reticence is always is the Marquette way!  I’m just personally tired of the rain and cold and would still like some sunshine and warmth!

SWEENEY TODD CUTS HEADS (OR NECKS) AT THE VISTA THEATER IN NEGAUNEE.

Thanks to Emma Couling for stopping in this morning to tell us all about the upcoming Peninsula Arts Appreciation Council production of “Sweeney Todd” a musical about a murderous barber and his accomplices who bake the victims into pies.  The production is being mounted at the Vista Theater in Negaunee.  She is the director of this production and she told us about some of the ins and outs of directing such a well-known piece.  To hear her interview, click “HERE“, and for more about the Peninsula Arts Appreciation Council and the Vista Theater, click “HERE“.

Catch you all again soon!

A MONDAY AND A RETURN TO ACTIVITY IN TOWN!

It’s Monday morning and the students are back at good ol’ Northern Michigan University.  Suddenly, there’s several thousand more people in our sleepy little burg and that can be a double-edged sword!  It’s great to have the energy, enthusiasm, interaction and commerce that comes from new people and returning people in town, but it also increases the traffic, both vehicular and pedestrian, that we need to be aware of as we travel through Marquette and the surrounding communities.  And of course, don’t forget about the bikers and the skateboarders!  Watch out as you are driving about!

TALKIN’ POLITICS WITH THE STATE DEMOCRATIC PARTY CHAIR.

MAIN STREET MONDAY SEEMED TO STUMP A FEW!

Congratulations to Mike M., who was the winner today of Classic Cartoon Trivia on Main Street Monday.  He picked up 2-14″ three-topping pizzas for knowing the answer for the contest today was “SuperFriends”!  It seemed like we stumped quite a few of you today, but it’s good to throw you guys a challenge every now and then.  We’ll do it again next week thanks to Main Street Pizza!

FAREWELL TO THEE!

That’s it  for a fun-filled Monday!  Welcome back NMU…enjoy your time here in Marquette County.  It’s a pretty good time and worth the effort!

See Ya!

YOU NEED AT LEAST THREE RADIOS TO KEEP UP WITH THIS MORNING SHOW!

Sometimes you feel like a soldier in the US Army when you listen to Mark & Walt in the Morning, because we get more things done by 10-am than many radio stations accomplish ALL DAY!  Today’s show was a prime example of that.  A sterling mix of community information, exclusive interviews with newsmakers and your favorite music along with two windbags moving hot air like it’s going out of style!

EXCLUSIVE SIT-DOWN INTERVIEW WITH THE GOVERNOR.

THE NEWS BEACON AND THE GOV.

THE NEWS BEACON AND THE GOV.

Thanks to Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm for taking a few minutes out of her busy schedule to chat with me about some of the issues making the news in our area.  We talked about the latest in governmental financial support for the Founder’s Landing development in Marquette as well as the effort to house out-of-state prisoners in Michigan’s slated-to-close prison facilities.  More items were also discussed, and to listen to the exclusive interview with the Governor, click “HERE“.

COMMUNITY-BASED EFFORTS TO BETTER THE COMMUNITY’S FACILITIES.

COREY AND RILEY TALK ABOUT FRINGE COLLECTIVE.

COREY AND RILEY TALK ABOUT FRINGE COLLECTIVE.

Anna Mattson stopped in to chat about an upcoming concert to benefit Miner’s Park in Negaunee.  She was joined in the studios by Cody Scanlon and Riley Torreano from the band Fringe Collective, who will be performing at the event this Tuesday at 6:30pm at Miner’s Park in Negaunee.  Funds raised at the event will go to the continued efforts to upgrade the recreational facilities at the park.  To listen to the interview with Anna, Cody and Riley, please click “HERE.”

AN OPEN AND FAIR MARKET COMES TO MARQUETTE.

EFFERVESCENT BETSY AND TOLERANT MARK!

EFFERVESCENT BETSY AND TOLERANT MARK!

Thanks to Betsy Jessup and Mark Paulsen with St. Mark’s and Messiah Lutheran Churches in Marquette for coming in to talk about a special market going on in Marquette this weekend where people can shop for items created by international and domestic artists and have the money go directly to them.  They also talked about a special event coming up next week in Marquette that is marking the end of summer.  To listen to the interview with Betsy and Mark, please click “HERE.

HAVE A WONDERFUL WEEKEND!

Whew!  on that jam-packed note, I think it’s time to say Good-Bye to you and hope you have a safe weekend and watch out for all of the new folks in the Marquette area (NMU Students and their well-meaning but still lost parents!)  It was only 23 years ago when I made my first steps on the Northern Michigan University campus as a freshman.  It seems like only yesterday.  BUT IT WASN’T!!!  AND I’M GETTING OLD!

Be good, or at least, be careful!

TALKIN’ SCOUTIN’ WITH DEWEY!

SCOUT EXECUTIVE DEWEY JONES.

SCOUT EXECUTIVE DEWEY JONES.

A busy day on the show today included a chat with Dewey Jones with the Hiawathaland Council of the Boy Scouts of America.  He gave us a quick rundown of events and activities that area scouts had engaged in over the past few months.  He also discussed upcoming planned events in the area and around the region.  He also gave a preview of the updated Boy Scout manual which now, for the first time, has an online portion for download to iPods and the like.  To listen in to Dewey’s interview, click “HERE“.

TOMORROW LOOKS EVEN BUSIER!!

Tune in tomorrow morning for what is shaping up to be quite a busy day on the show as well!  Lots of guests and a ton of giveaways, as well as snappy banter between yours truly and Mark Evans.  Should be a crackin’ good time!  We’ll see you then!

SO HERE WE GO AGAIN!  IT’S ALL THE SAME, YET DIFFERENT, Y’KNOW??!!?

BBBOOOOO!!! HISSSSS!!!

BBBOOOOO!!! HISSSSS!!!

So Brett Favre has now signed with the Minnesota Vikings.  Good luck with that, Vikes!  The lates stunt by this guy has brought renewed interest and fresh excitement into the NFL, and he hasn’t had to fight any dogs to do it!   Y’know, on that note, Michael Vick is probably the happiest NFL player this week with the latest chapter of “As the Favre Turns”.  With the spotlight now firmly on Favre, Vick has to be counting his lucky stars that another quarterback is the media focus.

FAVRE’S A TURNCOAT “4” SURE!

TRY THAT ON FOR SIZE, BRETT!

TRY THAT ON FOR SIZE, BRETT!

I’m alright with the fact that Favre says he still wants to play the game.  I am alright with him feeling like he still has something to give to the game.  I understand the competitive nature and the desire to keep playing.  But for the VIKINGS??!!??  That simply makes the whole thing somewhat personal.  He now will play AGAINST the team that he was a legacy player for!  They’re in the same division and play each other twice in one season.  It will be like the name of the movie “There Will Be Blood”!  Just ask Nick Barnett, with the Packers, he says he can’t wait to play against Favre and lay a big hit or two on the quarterback!!  That means October and early November will be violent.

THE PROGNOSTICATION IS BEGINNING!!

SMILIN' BILL TIBOR IS LISTENING FOR A PACKERS SUPER BOWL!!

SMILIN' BILL TIBOR IS CALLING FOR A PACKERS SUPER BOWL!!

Our in-house Green Bay Packer expert, Bill Tibor, has predicted a bombshell, so I decided to write it down and log it here in the blog in case he ends up being correct!  His theory is that Favre will be severely embarrassed on the field during the game against the Packers in Minnesota in October and will go on to suffer a questionable injury in the game prior to the scheduled Vikings/Packers tilt at Lambeau Field in November.  Favre will be listed as day-to-day leading up to that game and the Vikings will go on to Lambeau Field WITHOUT BRETT FAVRE!!!! He will sit out the game at Lambeau due to injury and one of the most eagerly anticipated games in NFL history will be a dud!  Time will tell if Bill was correct!

THAT’S ENOUGH OF THAT CLAPTRAP!!

Hey, let’s get outside and enjoy that rest of the Summer!  Football season will be here soon enough.  Heck, it’s still Baseball Season and there’s a lot of time to get together a couple of games of BOCCE BALL as well!

See ya!

-Walt

FAVRE IS GOING TO MINNESOTA TO PLAY FOR THE VIKINGS.

All I can say is this…I hope it’s all worth it in the end.
